THE BEST IN DESERT TENNIS HAPPENS at DEEP CANYON!
If there is a more active tennis program in Palm Desert, CA, well I certainly don't know where it is.
Beginning in November and running through April, the action is brisk and enjoyable on all 12 of Deep Canyon's courts. And, during the prime season months of January, February and March all of the courts will be filled by 7:30 am. Around 9 am they will empty and then quickly fill with the next round of players with another group waiting in the wings for the 10:30 am round. In fact, tennis play is so popular that in recent years the club has rented 2 additional courts just outside of the Deep Canyon gates to make sure everyone is accommodated.
And, that's just a start. Lots of folks form up teams to play in a variety of desert area leagues and the national USTA League program as well.
Weekend tournaments are held throughout the season in men's, women's and mixed doubles.
Every Wednesday afternoon features "Pizza Tennis." 40 players gather for mid-afternoon mixed doubles followed by pizza (burgers sometimes, brats too) and adult beverages.
And, each Sunday morning in season, spectators gather to savor a weekly Exibition Match featuring some of the club's and area's best players. It's all part of a regular Sunday social gathering around the courts that includes complimentary donuts, coffee and the monthly "Mimosa Sunday."
Tennis Director Larry Hunter is in his 21st year at the helm and knows everyone and puts games together for new folks arriving on the scene. After that, new players quickly start forming up their own games just like residents here have been doing for years. Larry is always available to do stringing, line up a lesson and to guide people through new equipment and clothing purchases as well.
Game improvement skills are offered during the winter season by teaching professional Steve Vaughan. He's a Deep Canyon owner who along with Larry Hunter are members of the United States Professional Tennis Association.
If tennis is your game, you will love the action, the comaraderie and the quality of play that abounds at Deep Canyon Tennis Club.
